February 06, 2008

Although it is truth that Mexico is delayed in on the scientific field, it is more worrying the delayed on the technological innovation field, because we “do not generate patents”, which stuck as country, assures Rosaura Ruiz, who will be the President of the Mexican Academy of Sciences (AMC in Spanish) for the period 2008-2012.

Who is also Secretary of the Institutional Development Area of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) said that the country would only be able to develop when pushing ahead science and technology; effort in which shall participate three sectors; government, private industry and the academic institutions.

In forthcoming April, the scientist will assume the leadership of AMC, one of which main goals shall be to maintain a close contact with the governmental representatives,  who as from different international evaluations, as the PISA test of the Organization for the Economic Cooperation and Development (OCDE in Spanish), starts showing its worries for the educational delay in the country.  She pointed out: “We hope that the government shall not only worry but also takes care of resolving the problem.

“We shall join efforts amongst the federal and state governments, as well as with businessmen, academy people and research institutions, in order to generate technological development.  In which refers to science, we have not grow in recent years; before we were leading in Latin American, today, Brazil exceeds us.  More than stagnant, we are laggard.  This lack of growth is even greater in the technological area.  In Mexico, we have not followed innovation and we have no patents registered; it is worrying.”

Rosaura Ruiz assured there are two main goals for AMC: to encourage the scientific educations and to improve the development of science in México.

She expressed that during her work heading the academy, she will urge the creation of scientific and technological parks, through which population will get close to this areas.
