The Ecuadorian Intellectual Property institute (IEPI) shall act as guardian of Intellectual Property rights and, at the same time, motivate persons to perform intellectually creative works.
“To reach these goals, is necessary to protect these creations and better if it is done in a legal way; moreover if the right of an author over a determined work, born upon it is shaped; however, it is important to register it in the shortest term”, said Fernando Calderón, deputy regional director of IEPI.
Defending the right
One of the tasks of the IEPI is to advise its users on the defense of copyrights, which might cover different fields. “We give details on the proceeding by means of skilled persons; besides, furnish or enhance any kind of information on Intellectual Property”, he said.
Intellectual Property is divided, basically, in three parts: copyrights, industrial property, and vegetable obtainments.
Copyrights may cover works of art, scientific and literary; i.e., from songs up to sculptures, amongst other. In the other hand, Industrial Property might protect trademarks, patents, industrial models, and utility models.
Under Vegetable Obtainments, it is possible to preserve and register new types of flowers, roses, amongst others.
“Unfortunately, in our country does not exist a culture to respect Industrial Property; hence, the IEPI invites everyone to know more about these subjects, which are relatively new for us”. The premises of the IEPI are located at Edf. Acrópolis, 5th floor (at José Peralta monument). Phone 2888172. (JMB)
