Mother Cells: regulations on research and therapies

January 01, 2008

Buenos Aires was the seat of the First International Workshop where local and British scientific interchanged experiences on the use of Mother Cells.  The initiative, named “Regulation of Researches and Clinic therapies with Mother Cells” was a product from the joint work performed by the National Agency of Scientific and Technologic Promotion, through its Advisory Commission on Regenerative Medicine and Cellular Therapies, and the University of Edinburgh- Centre for Intellectual Property and Technology Law.

The United Kingdom is the country that has hardly worked on the regulation of researches and application of therapies with mother cells.  Hence, the general goal of the Workshop was to explore the most effective modalities for the promotion, protection and control of biotechnology, comparing the model of the United Kingdom with the one of our country.

The importance of the roll of the scientists on the creation of conceptual frames to guide the debate and generation of information aimed to the massive public, was remarked. In the other hand, the importance of generating social agreements, regarding the corporate values associated with cell therapy investigation and development, was pointed out.  Regarding the regulatory aspect, it was clearly defined that specific norms shall be established to regulate investigation and to harmonize them with clinic therapies, last one already in force and in charge of the INCUCAI (in Spanish).

Ethic implications on the research and application of therapies using mother cells is one of the main subjects over which the work of year 2008 will be developed.  It was recognized that actual structures of the health sector are already actively acting on this subject and that there is a strong commitment to inter act in a dynamic and flexible way.

The performance of the Advisory Commission of Regenerative Medicine of the Agency was also remarked as an important element that shall be maximized in its function. Finally, it was also remarked that private activity as well as the public one, shall be regulated in the same way, taking into consideration the general interests and the benefits that mother cells investigation may have for Argentina as a whole.
