The 10 most valuable brands in the world

May, 2010

The BrandZ 2010 study, conducted by Millward Brown comprising the top 100 brands in the world, in terms of their marked valuation, is been just published. Currently, the top 10 most valuable brands is lead by technology brands, which have taken the four first positions: Google, IBM, Apple and Microsoft.

Google reoccupies the first position for the fourth consecutive year, with a brand value exceeding US$ 114.000 million; a 14% inter-annual increase. Behind the undisputed leader of the browser, are four other technology brands such as IBM, valued in US$ 86.000 (+30%); Apple, valued in US$ 83.000 (+32%), and Microsoft with a stable value at US$ 76.000.

The best-positioned Spanish brands within this ranking are Santander (18.012 millions), strengthening its position as the seventh financial brand in the world, and BBVA (12.977 millions), is in the 13th place. Movistar (12.434 millions) became the eight mobile operators in the world, and Zara (8.986 millions), meanwhile, is the third brand of clothing in the world, just behind Nike and H&M.

These brands rankings are useful for monitoring the evolution of the sector and of the company, but do not quit fit the monetary value assigned to the mark by itself. For example, think in the Spanish brands BBVA and Santander, both have a value separately, but in the impossible case of a merge; the resulting brand would be different and likely with a value higher or lesser than the synergies that might be achieved.

In the other hand, a brand without a company behind is nothing. Google is currently the number 1, but if Google stops doing things in the way it do them now, due to change of company’s policies, or because the brand is to be managed by another business group, the brand would lose all the meaning and value it has today.
